Book Review: “The Grown Woman’s Guide to Greatness: Eight Spiritual Lessons You Must Learn Today,” by Lakara Foster

Lakara Foster’s second published book, “The Grown Woman’s Guide to Greatness,” is an easy to understand, accessible read for women of all ages. In it, Foster exposes her rawest self, sharing her journey of spiritual growth, one of many voices on various life paths, to incite self-awareness and discovery. Through the use of Biblical principles, she shows through prayer, faith and action, that women can answer their divine calling and become their greatest selves.

Aimed at young adult to middle aged women, Foster’s delivery is informal. To encourage authenticity and relate to her readers, she gives personal, relatable stories that provide something for everyone. One easily gets the feeling they are sitting, as she says in her book, “on the back porch sipping mimosas” receiving advice from a friend who has been through it all. Her approach is like a mixture of an early Iyanla Vanzant and the character Maya, from Girlfriends.

She offers life lessons in eight sections. Each section begins with a succinct powerful phrase, a jewel of knowledge followed by introductory quotes perfect for quodophiles and Facebook philosophers to remember and share with others. Among these life lessons, Foster encourages her readers to spend time alone in order to hear their inner voices, discover themselves and their calling, or purpose. She stresses the importance of being a servant for others, for sharing your gift with those in need. Most importantly, she discusses the significance of physically, emotionally and mentally preparing yourself for the things you are asking for and hoping to receive.

To keep the reader engaged, she asks insightful, introspective questions, and provides writing activities and opportunities for growth. Near the end of the book, she presents her D.A.S.H. model for optimal living. The concept (Dare, Aspire, Service and Honor) is short, powerful and easy to remember. This book, with its focus on spiritual alignment and internal balance, reads like a beginner’s guide to books such as Oriah Mountain Dreamer’s “The Dance” and Don Miguel Ruiz’s “Mastery of Love” and “The Four Agreements”. Throughout the book, her message is clear: the signs of our life’s calling and self-healing are all around us, if only we will take the time to stop and listen.
